A guide To New Cafes Opening In Kuala Lumpur

There’s always something new opening around KL, PJ and Klang, but this month felt especially packed, because new cafes have been opening non-stop lately, and it’s easy for them to blur into each other. But over the past few weeks, we came across a few that felt a little more distinct, whether through their food, their space, or just the overall experience. So we’ve made our way through a mix of them, from more low-key spots to ones that were already getting attention, and these were the ones that felt a bit more memorable. Not just for what they serve, but how they made us feel while we were there.

CONFIT

Not every cafe announces itself and Confit is perfectly fine with that. Woven into Jalan Beringin with no glowing signs and no pastry display luring you in, what greets you instead is the clean bare walls, the steady hiss of an espresso machine, and the faint smells of roasted beans and warm milk. The menu reads like a world tour of coffee and changes with the seasons, so what you drink today might not be there the next month. Think of it less as placing a coffee order and more as catching an exhibition before it closes.

NITO KOHI

Within a music collective space in Damansara Perdana, Nito Kohi sits right above the usual cafe circuit, which is why you don’t really stumble into it, you’d have to go looking for it. The fourth-floor space feels more like a hybrid between a coffee bar and an ambient lounge. It’s minimal, slightly introspective, and designed for people who prefer their cafes with a little bit more breathing room. The coffee here is on another level, with a focus on espresso-based drinks and filter brews. Nito Kohi operates more like a listening room than a traditional cafe, especially when it overlaps with events or gatherings in the same space.

Tangerain by munching mob

Ara Damansara’s latest cafe arrives with a very much easygoing kind of energy. Tangerain Cafe feels built for casual meetups with your friend, unplanned meals with your family, and long catch-ups with ex-colleagues that drift from lunch into tea time without notice. The menu leans wide rather than niche, offering familiar cafe staples that make ordering simple. Expect everything from rice bowls and pasta to fish and chips, salads, soups, sandwiches and classic brunch plates like French toast. It’s the kind of place that doesn’t ask too much of you, just sit down and pick what you feel like.

Niko Niko Onigiri

Niko Niko Onigiri has just opened a new space in Puchong and it’s quite a big one for them. The menu is honestly quite extensive, because they’ve got almost 50 onigiri options, which is a lot. From the usual salmon combos to things like unagi and octopus. It’s not just onigiri though. There’s soba, somen, donburi, ochazuke. Feels more like a full casual Japanese spot rather than just takeaway rice balls.

SHINMATTO

Shinmatto is a very small space, around 10 seats, set up to feel like a compact Japanese fish market counter. Bright lighting, tight seating, a chilled display of seafood right in front of you. Nothing overly styled, just the simple, slow-living Japanese way everyone loves. If you’ve been to Japan, you’ll probably recognise it immediately. That slightly cramped, no-frills setup where everything is close together, a bit quiet but still busy in its own way. Run by the same team behind Umi Ka Shin, the focus here is still on seafood flown in from Japan, and the menu sticks mostly to sashimi dons. Everything comes in small, almost palm-sized bowls, so it leans more towards trying a couple of things rather than committing to one. It’s not somewhere you sit for hours. More like stepping into a small corner of Japan for a quick, satisfying meal, then heading back out.

tiny dusun

Tiny Dusun in Klang feels quite different from most new cafes right now. It’s a lot more personal, and this you can tell. Run by a husband and wife, and the food leans very kampung. Not in a trendy way, more like proper regional dishes you don’t usually see in cafes. Things like pek nga with gulai ikan, or kuih sopang with coconut. It’s quite specific, and that’s what actually makes it stand out. Even the drinks follow that direction, with just simple things like bunga telang lemonade. It feels slower here, and even the camping chairs outside indicate that.

Ah GONG house

Ah Gong House lands somewhere between a cafe and a memory. The moment you step in, it doesn’t feel like a cafe, it just feels kept. Like a home that’s been lived in for years and decided to open up to share. Worn wooden furniture, those old tiles that are so hard to find these days, small objects that don’t match but somehow belong together. The menu they serve is all things local, familiar and straightforward. Something that’s more towards what you’d expect at home rather than something reworked for a cafe. It’s the kind of place that you’d want to bring your grandparents to just because you know how much they would love the nostalgic vibe here, and that vibe gets better the longer you stay.

to melt for

This one’s enveloped within The Pocket in Sungai Besi, and if you’ve been there before, you’ll know the kind of energy it carries, with different cafes and creative spaces all sitting side by side. To Melt For fits just right in into that mix. Small setup and just a gelato counter doing what it needs to do: make good gelato. The focus is on real ingredients, and you can taste it. Flavours come through clean and not too overly sweet, which is exactly how we like our gelato. And it’s only open Friday to Sunday, which means it’s not somewhere you randomly pass by every day, but something you’d need to plan for. And for us, it’s definitely worth to melt for.

Mykro Coffee Collective

Mykro Coffee Collective is like one of those places you don’t even think twice before suggesting to when someone asks “Where should we get coffee?”. It’s got that slightly industrial look but more clean and open. People coming in for a quick cup, some just sitting there for hours, and either way, it doesn’t feel out of place. The coffee here is solid and the kind you can trust. You just order, and you know it’s going to be good. It’s not a destination cafe. You wouldn’t travel across town just for it. But if it’s near you, or you’re in the area, it’s super easy to just keep going back.
