The world’s celebrated ballet dancers are coming to KUALA LUMPUR
If you’ve been keeping up with the tabloids, you’ve probably seen a certain Hollywood star making headlines after a comment about ballet being one of the art forms that no one cares about anymore — a relic kept breathing by a generous few.
This April, a rather eloquent rebuttal is being staged. After 4 years, the Ballet Theatre Malaysia is stepping back into the spotlight with the Ballet Stars Gala. Founded in 2020, the Ballet Theatre Malaysia was born out of a simple but powerful observation: Malaysia has never been short of talent. Across the country, little boys and girls who dream of lacing up their first pointe shoes fall in love with the art form every day — yet for far too long, there was nowhere for that love to go. While ballet schools have long nurtured young dancers across the nation, a professional avenue to take them further had never existed. So much talent went untapped, and so many dreams quietly went unfulfilled.

Ballet Theatre Malaysia is the nation’s first professional ballet company, and they wear that responsibility with pride. Striving to build a stage for Malaysian dancers who dared to dream of more, and to show that a world-class ballet career does not necessarily begin with a one-way ticket abroad.
Alongside the company’s very own Malaysian dancers, the Ballet Stars Gala will be graced by five internationally acclaimed guest artists: Alina Cojocaru, Alexandr Trusch, Simone Messmer, Ami Morita, and Rainer Krenstetter. Each a celebrated name on the world’s most prestigious stages. Decades of world-class artistry, trained, moulded and praised across the great ballet houses of Europe and beyond.

The evening’s programme is nothing short of a grand tour through the art form itself, from the swaying romance of classical masterpieces to the sharp, striking energy of contemporary works. Few evenings can hold the timeless works of names like Marius Petipa and George Balanchine, as well as the striking, restless inventions of contemporary works, yet that is what the Ballet Stars Gala sets out to accomplish.
Bringing world-class stages to Malaysia has always been their mission. This 24-26 April, at D Theatre Malaysia, Hextar World Empire City, the curtains are ready to rise again. Tickets start at only RM119 for an evening of rare artistry that will no doubt stay with you long after the final bow.

Ballet has always been a language without words, but it was never silent. It lives in the strain of a held position, in the precision of a foot placed exactly where it needs to be, in the way a body can carry grief or joy without explaining either. You’re invited to sit with that. To watch, to question, and maybe to recognise something that doesn’t need words to make sense.
