Shangri-La Rasa Ria: A Resort That Gives More Than It Takes

No, Not Another “Sustainable Stay”

Luxury looks different here. It’s not plated in gold or wrapped in flash. Sure, Shangri-La Rasa Ria has postcard sunsets and rainforest trails — it is, after all, set on 400 acres in Tuaran, just 34km from Kota Kinabalu. But what sets it apart isn’t what you can see in a brochure. It’s what happens in the background.

Let’s be honest, sustainability has become a buzzword. A box to tick, a tagline to add, something hotels chase because they feel like they should. But at Rasa Ria, it doesn’t feel like that. It’s not a marketing gimmick or a flashy campaign. It’s just… how they do things.

Malaysia’s First Hotel with ISO 20121 Certification

In 2025, the resort became the first hotel in Malaysia to receive ISO 20121 certification — a global benchmark for sustainable event management. And while that sounds technical, what it really means is they looked at the way they were hosting weddings, conferences, and big celebrations, and made changes that actually reduced their impact.

“We didn’t want to just meet a checklist,” says General Manager Fiona Hagan. “We wanted it to shape how we think, how we work, so it becomes part of our culture, not just part of our image.”

Because here, sustainability isn’t something they shout about. It’s just something they do — quietly, consistently, and with care.

Sustainability That Happens Quietly

A lot of what makes Rasa Ria special isn’t something guests would pick up on. But that’s kind of the point. In 2024 alone, more than 60% of the resort’s waste was kept out of landfills. They collect rainwater. Recycle laundry water. Compost food waste. Crush used glass bottles into sand for their gardens.

It’s not performative, it’s just practical. “We don’t expect people to notice every detail,” Fiona says. “But these systems let us care for the environment without affecting the comfort of our guests.”

Even the community is included. Locals can drop off their own glass bottles to be repurposed, turning what’s often a closed-door system into something shared.

Caring for the Things You Might Never See

Sometimes sustainability means changing how you handle events. Sometimes, it means looking out for lives you might never even encounter. One of the resort’s quietest, but most meaningful commitments is to the pangolin, a gentle, endangered creature native to the region. Through local partnerships, Rasa Ria supports long-term habitat monitoring and awareness work to protect the species from illegal wildlife trafficking.

“It’s easy to care about what’s visible,” Fiona says. “But the things that matter most often live in the background.”

From the Land, to the People

Caring for the land is just one part of the story. Rasa Ria also invests in the people who share it. They work with Sabahan artisans and women-led initiatives like Changgih Designs, not just to showcase craft, but to keep culture alive in a way that creates jobs and dignity. In 2024 alone, over RM243,000 was invested into education and outreach, from local school support to hands-on learning initiatives.

A Team That Knows the Why

You can feel it in the way the staff speak to you, they know exactly what this place stands for. The hospitality goes deeper than polished service. Every team member is trained to understand the purpose behind the resort’s sustainability work, not just the what, but the why. Whether it’s explaining how their food waste is composted or why there are no plastic water bottles in the rooms, it never feels scripted. It feels lived.

Workshops and open conversations are part of the culture here, not as mandatory sessions, but as chances to reconnect with what they’re doing and who they’re doing it for. Because at the end of the day, sustainability only works if people believe in it. And the people at Rasa Ria don’t just believe in it, they carry it, every day.

A Stay That Stays With You

There’s a lot you’ll remember about Rasa Ria, the scent of the sea breeze in the morning, the way the light hits the forest canopy at dusk, the sound of birdsong cutting through the silence. But what really stays isn’t always what you expect.

It’s the subtle things: the sense that this place is cared for, that the people working here care for it too. That even the most luxurious parts of your stay were designed with thought. Not indulgence for indulgence’s sake, but with intention.

You might not remember every system, programme or recycled drop of water. But maybe you’ll think differently about how a hotel can show up for its land. Maybe you’ll start to notice the quiet work, in other places and maybe one day in your own life.

Because in the end, the best places don’t just give you memories. They give you perspective.
