From Sales Floor to Spice Fields: The Story of The Spice Man and Sarawak’s Extraordinary Pepper
Deep in the heart of Sarawak, where emerald rainforests whisper secrets to the sun-drenched earth, Dennis and Melissa, the intrepid duo behind The Spice Man, are rewriting the culinary narrative one peppercorn at a time. We had the honour to sit with them over tea and learn their story.
Sharon : Dennis, tell us the story behind The Spice Man. How did you find your way from the sales floor to the pepper fields?
Dennis : (chuckles) It wasn’t exactly planned! One day, my uncle, who’s been in the family pepper business for 30 years, mentioned he was thinking of retiring. The idea sparked something in me. Melissa, my wife, had always wanted to do something entrepreneurial, so we saw it as a chance to build something together. We swapped spreadsheets for sun-drenched fields, and The Spice Man was born!
Sharon : And Melissa, you were an engineer before this? Quite the career change!
Melissa : (laughs) It was! But the idea of sharing Sarawak’s incredible pepper with the world, doing it sustainably and ethically, really resonated with me. Now, watching people’s faces awed with that first sniff of our pepper, it’s the most rewarding feeling ever.
Sharon : Tell us about your pepper. What makes Sarawak pepper so special?
Dennis : Oh, where do I begin? It’s like comparing a supermarket apple to a freshly picked one from the orchard. Our white pepper, delicate, whispers warmth and floral notes. Black pepper, plucked at its peak, is a bold symphony of spice with a hint of citrus. It’s all about terroir, hand-picked with love, and processed without any nasties.
Sharon : And you mentioned sustainability?
Melissa : Absolutely! We’re all about respecting the environment and supporting the local community. We work directly with small farmers, using traditional methods that have been passed down for generations.
Sharon : And your reach goes beyond Sarawak?
Dennis : Definitely! We deliver throughout Malaysia, and even had the pleasure of sending a taste of Sarawak to Singapore. We’re working towards certifications like MESTI and GMP, and of course, expanding internationally in the near future. Watch out, world, Sarawak pepper is coming!
Sharon : Where can our readers get their hands on this pepper magic?
Melissa: (smiles) No magic, just pure Sarawak goodness! You can reach Dennis directly at +6 014-800 6577. He’s always happy to chat about pepper, or maybe even share a recipe or two!
