How One Restaurant Redefined Taiwanese Dining
When Mrs Wang arrived in Malaysia in 1992, she noticed something missing; there weren’t that many Taiwanese restaurants around. Coming from a family with more than a century in the tea trade, she felt compelled to carry the legacy while at the same time sharing her own love for authentic, home-cooked Taiwanese meals.
She says, “I wanted to pair our family’s traditional Oolong Tea with authentic, home-cooked Taiwanese cuisine, the kind of comforting flavours I grew up with. Combining these two passions became the foundation for what would eventually become Fong Lye.”
The heart of Fong Lye’s menu comes from the dishes Mrs Wang missed most. Three-Cup Chicken and Fish Head Clay Pot were staples at her family table, these were meals bound to memory and tradition. They carry the flavour of comfort, almost like stepping back into grandma’s kitchen, where food is warmth itself. Recreating these recipes in Malaysia brought her relief, but more importantly, it gave her a way to share that same sense of home and belonging with others.

BUILDING A HOME AWAY FROM HOME
From its first eatery in Jalan Imbi to five restaurants across Kuala Lumpur today, Fong Lye’s growth has been steady and intentional.
“I wouldn’t say there was a single turning point that defined our growth,” Mrs Wang explains.
“It has always been about continuous progress.”
Fong Lye’s hardest challenge was training local chefs to master the authentic Taiwanese flavours. But through guidance and commitment, they slowly but surely guided the chefs to create the dishes that meet the expectations.

“It’s not something that can be achieved overnight; it requires time, dedication, and patience”.
Alongside her husband, Mrs Wang developed a quality control system that ensures every dish “stays true to the natural, healthy, and authentic flavours”. Taiwanese food is vibrantly diverse and accommodating to all Malaysian tastes, ensuring everybody finds a taste of home in each meal.
Their commitment extends beyond food. “Our approach has centred on one core idea: creating a warm, cosy, and welcoming atmosphere that feels just like home.” Over the years, the style of the restaurants has evolved, influenced by their daughters’ fresh perspective to connect with younger diners. Yet, the heart of the brand remains steadfast.

LOOKING AHEAD
After more than 30 years, the Three Cup Chicken continues to remain as Fong Lye’s defining dish, beloved by generations of customers. But the story is still unfolding. Mrs Wang hints at plans to expand beyond Klang Valley with a new concept, and shares her excitement for an upcoming relaunch: “ One project we’re especially thrilled about is the relaunch of our best-selling tea.”
For Mrs Wang and Fong Lye, it’s not just about food, but about keeping a piece of Taiwan alive in Malaysia, where a story of culture, family, and home continues to unfold.
